A synbiotic combines live microorganisms with a substrate used by microorganisms in the gut. The important detail is how the components are expected to work.
Complementary and synergistic are different
The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics distinguishes two approaches. A complementary synbiotic combines a probiotic and a prebiotic whose evidence stands independently. A synergistic synbiotic is designed and demonstrated so the substrate is selectively used by the co-administered microorganism.
Serene Biotics uses the complementary approach. We do not claim that Bimuno GOS specifically feeds DR7.
What Bimuno GOS does
Bimuno® GOS is a prebiotic that nourishes beneficial bacteria already living in the gut. In Vulevic 2018, 91 adults were randomized and 83 completed the protocol and were included in the per-protocol analysis. At 1.37 g active GOS daily, participants reported lower occasional bloating, gas, and abdominal-discomfort scores than placebo within 7 days.
What DR7 does
L. plantarum DR7 is a named probiotic strain. Ingredient-level human research supports gut health and a healthy stress response. The evidence belongs to the DR7 strain at the amount and in the populations studied.
What the pairing means
Daily Calm Focus and Nightly Rest & Restore each pair 1 billion CFU of DR7 with 1.37 g of active GOS. The ingredients are independently studied and used together as a complementary synbiotic.
The finished combination has not been tested in a human trial. That means the separate ingredient studies cannot establish that the pair works better together, that GOS selectively feeds DR7, or that an individual will notice an effect on a specific schedule.
Three questions worth asking of any synbiotic
- Is the microorganism identified? Look for the strain, not only the species.
- Is the substrate identified and quantified? The type and amount should be clear.
- Has the finished combination been tested? If not, the label should distinguish independent ingredient evidence from combination evidence.
